Tips for Dry Hair and Skin in Colder Weather

The time of year is fast approaching for comfy sweaters, Uggs, and thicker scarves! In my neck of the woods the temperature is dropping fast and the first place I can see the signs of it are in my hands! In colder temperatures my hands get SUPER dry! Dryer, colder air typically decreases the amount of moisture your skin and hair can retain. The results are often dry, scaly, possibly itchy skin and rough and ragged hair.

Try a few of these remedies for lackluster hair and skin during colder seasons.

Skin

• Use a thicker hand cream than usual to cure dry hands. Keep a travel size in your purse and apply it often!
* Try Bath and Body Works Lay It On Thick Hand Cream

• Make sure to exfoliate your whole body at least once a week. It’s important to scrub away any layers of dead skin so your moisturizer can penetrate easier and do its job!
* Try Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliator

• After you shower, apply a light oil, body cream or body butter to your skin when it is still damp. Applying your moisturizer to damp skin creates softness and suppleness and the oil serves to lock moisture into your skin.
* Try The Body Shop Shea Body Butter

• Using a night cream can be very beneficial because it works throughout the night so when you wake up in the morning you have fresh, young looking skin.
* Try Philosophy When Hope Is Not Enough Replenishing Cream

• For a homemade remedy try mashed avocado, olive oil, and mashed banana with honey which can give surprising results when it comes to creating soft and glowing skin

Hair

• Increase deep conditioning to once or twice a week depending on your hair type. Trust me, your hair will thank you for this!
* Try Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor

• Apply a daily moisturizing cream to your strands whenever you feel that your hair is starting to look a little parched and rough.
* Try Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream

• Opt for more up-do’s and/or braided styles. Whatever your preference, choose a style that protects your hair as much as possible from exposure to the elements. The less your hair is exposed to the cold, the less your hair has a chance of drying out.

• Kill two birds with one stone and increase the moisture content in both your hair and skin by increasing your daily water intake, eating lots of leafy green veggies, and foods containing higher contents of Vitamins A, B, and E which will help create an outside softness and glow, from the inside.
